Mankato Family YMCA - STRIDE

Mankato Family YMCA STRIDE

STRIDE is a character building fitness and running program where boys in grades 3-8 have a chance to share their thoughts and opinions about various life topics. We provide a safe and encouraging environment that caters toward positive character development, while building running endurance to complete a season end 5K.

We encourage boys to exhibit excellence in character in all aspects of their lives, make healthy choices, and build confidence by leading them through a curriculum that incorporates fun activities and running. Our mission is to teach boys to know what is right, do what is right, and care about what is right.

What are three words that best describe you.
1. Caring
2. Giving
3. Dedicated

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? The power to heal cancer. I have lost both my parents and an aunt to cancer. With the power to heal, I would have the ability to cure people with cancer.

What's your running mantra? Think strong, be strong, finish strong.

Do you have a favorite running tip or piece of advice to share? It's your race. Have fun and be proud of your accomplishment.

Why are you committed to helping this particular charity? My son was in Stride for 3 sessions and absolutely it! The program helped him with developing confidence, learning the importance of team work and good sportsmanship, making new friends, and how to set goals and achieve them. I would love to see every child have the opportunity to be apart of this program.

Is this your first time participating in the Mankato Marathon? If not, which races have you ran? I started with the 10K and for several years after have participated in the half marathon.

What are three words that best describe you.
1. Kind
2. Understanding
3. Driven

What's your running mantra? While I’m in training, I remember there will be good and bad runs. On race day, I remind myself that I’m well trained and that the time clack does not dictate my accomplishments on the race course.

Do you have a favorite running tip or piece of advice to share? Find a group of friends who run, too. Whether you train with them or not, it is fun to have people to share your ups and downs with. These people will become mush more than “running buddies!” They will become your lifelong, best friends.

Why are you committed to helping this particular charity? Simply put, I love STRIDE. Being an adolescent boy is tough; they are often expected to be tough and rough. I think boys need to be lifted up and reminded that they are worthy of their feelings, successes, and should be celebrated. STRIDE is teaching our boys to work as a team, work had towards a goal, and become honorable young men.

Is this your first time participating in the Mankato Marathon? If not, which races have you ran? No; I have ran the full marathon once and the half marathon 5 times.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? Teleportation. You'd never be stuck in traffic. You wouldn't have to drive in bad weather. No car payment. No insurance costs. No maintenance. No waiting in the TSA line at the airport. No long uncomfortable flights. No being stuck going 30 in a 45 on Madison Avenue!!!

What's your running mantra? On longer runs I like to chant to myself: "Hydrate, eat, run smart, be gritty. The things I need to do so I don't feel shi**y." If I am struggling, I like to tell myself "I'll feel better in a mile" and I also like to use "I am stronger than I think".

Do you have a favorite running tip or piece of advice to share? Spend the money on a good pair of shoes! It's worth it.  Also, some peple don't feel like they can call themselves runner because they are not fast. Are you out there moving at a pace that is at least slightly faster than walking? Then you are a runner!

Why are you committed to helping this particular charity? My son has been in STRIDE in the Spring and Fall for the last few years now and he's in it again this Spring. He has made some lasting friendships and strengthened existing friendships. It has taught him that at times things can be difficult, but the end result of hard work is satisfaction. He has already put on more miles by the age of 12 than I did by the time I was 32. It's fun to see the kids get behind each other and encourage and support each other.

Is this your first time participating in the Mankato Marathon? If not, which races have you ran? No. I have run 1 (or 2) races every year since Mankato Marathon began in 2010. Everything from the 5K to the full marathon. I have run every possible race that an adult can run on this weekend.

What are three words that best describe you.
1. Friendly
2. Fun
3. Forgetful

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? A super memory, then I could always find my stuff!

What's your running mantra? Not a mantra person. I work at being in the moment or to completely shut down and be more meditative.

Do you have a favorite running tip or piece of advice to share? Stop chasing yourself or others. Don’t judge your running to how fast you used to be or to how fast others are, just appreciate what you can do today.

Why are you committed to helping this particular charity? Running has been a very big part of my life and how I have developed many of my friendships. The Stride program can provide a platform for young boys to go down a similar healthy lifestyle path.

Is this your first time participating in the Mankato Marathon? If not, which races have you ran? No, this is my 10th Mankato Marathon.
